OPEN DAY August 4th 2007
The
July floods
left us with no alternative but to cancel our open day. A big
disappointment for us, but only a minor inconvenience when compared
to the problems the floods caused in other parts of the country.
We were on site
in order to explain the situation to anyone that turned up, and I
hope we managed to speak to everyone who made their way to the site.
To these I would like to extend my thanks for their understanding,
support and donations.
The day
was not wasted. We removed the old barbed wire that was across
the southern end of the lock and replaced it with a much safer "post
and rail" fence.
We had been
hoping to meet many more of the descendents of Alfred Howse.
This didn't happen. But.............two of the great granddaughters
of John Howse (Alfred's brother) turned up. John was at one
time the lock keeper at Cerny Wick and later the landlord of the
"Good Intent". As Anne, Alfred's granddaughter, was
being entertained at the cottage this was a chance for second
cousins (I think) to compare notes.

The Basin has started to dry but
there is still a lot of surface
water. |
|
|
|
The
water level has dropped a bit, but
the automatic pump in the cellar of
the cottage is still pumping out
water. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
The water is still flowing down the
ditch at a very fast rate. |
|
|
|
|
|
Water is still flooding over the
footpath into the adjacent
fields. |

This
should have been our car park.

We
spent some time replacing the
barbed wire fence.

The
advantage of a wooden fence is that
you can lean on it. |

In
spite of everything it was a
very pleasant day. |

One
last job. To replace a
couple of dead trees.
