17th-18th February 2007
A very busy weekend at the Basin

We were very lucky again with the weather; cloudy with sunny periods, dry and not too cold.  I have to start with a "THANK YOU" to all the East Vale stalwarts, to WRG BITM, to Jan and Bob and not least to CWS, who make this all possible.

When we launched this project six months ago I never thought that we would have made so much progress.  The aqueduct and canal bed are clear and we can see what was lying beneath all that vegetation. We have started removing the trees who's roots have caused major damage. (Please remember that although we have to remove a few trees that are damaging the canal infrastructure, we do plant many, many more.) Plans are underway to get a machine in to level the far end of the basin, excavate part of the lock chamber and rebuild the length of towpath that we have cleared.  It is very encouraging for us to receive the favourable comments we get from the numerous walkers and visitors to the site.

Part of the stone aqueduct wall will need to be removed to expose the tree roots.

I think that the size of the roots surprised everyone.

Another tree, perched on the edge of the lock chamber entrance, also needs to be removed.

Three "tirfors" were attached to the tree to control its descent. The first trunk split from the root.

When the trees are finally cleared from the aqueduct wall we will be able to restore it to its former glory.  Some of the missing coping stones are visible laying just under the surface of the water.  (Bob has spotted another stone acting as a doorstep to the cottage)

Although we have to remove a few trees that are damaging the canal infrastructure, we plant many, many more.  In this area alongside the lock we planted new trees of various types.  This particular area is to provide a wind break for the cottage which will allow us to remove the trees growing in the lock and fully excavate it.

To our surprise very little disturbance to the brick and stone was caused.

Back at the wall and the decision has been made to remove two of the bigger trunks to relieve the pressure on the wall.  This will allow us more time to decide how to proceed with the the root problem.
